Thane, 9th July: A doctor allegedly assaulted by Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) leader Ramesh Mhatre at a municipal hospital in Maharashtra’s Thane has resigned from his post, saying he feared for his safety and had left the city permanently.

The doctor said he decided to quit because he no longer felt safe. “I have resigned because there is a lot of fear. Goons are watching us, and I have already left the city. They are very dangerous people. The other doctors may continue working there, but I cannot. I will not go back there again,” he said.

The incident occurred on July 6 at Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivli, where two doctors had advised the family of a newborn to shift the baby to another hospital as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was full and the child required specialised treatment.

According to hospital officials, the family contacted Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who allegedly arrived at the hospital with his supporters. A video of the incident purportedly shows Mhatre arguing with doctors and staff before allegedly striking a woman doctor’s mobile phone and assaulting another doctor, who sustained injuries.

Mhatre denied assaulting the doctors, claiming he only pushed away the woman’s phone because she was not listening. He also refused to apologise, saying he acted to save the lives of the woman and her child.

Police have registered a case against Mhatre and five associates. Mhatre was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the incident and was later admitted to Thane Civil Hospital after reportedly complaining of ill health.
