Guwahati, 24th April: The Gauhati High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Congress leader Pawan Khera in a criminal case linked to his remarks about Assam Chief Minister’s wife.

The case was filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma after Khera alleged that she possessed multiple foreign passports and undisclosed overseas assets, including properties in Dubai and interests in shell companies.

Following the allegations, a complaint was registered at the Guwahati Crime Branch under charges related to defamation, cheating and forgery.

The High Court reserved its verdict after hearing arguments from both sides earlier this week before rejecting the plea.

Earlier in the case, Assam Police had attempted to serve notice at Khera’s residence in Delhi. He subsequently approached the Telangana High Court and secured interim transit anticipatory bail.

However, the Supreme Court of India later stayed that protection and directed him to seek relief from the appropriate court in Assam.

Khera had again moved the Supreme Court seeking relief, but the plea was declined, prompting him to approach the Gauhati High Court.

With the rejection of anticipatory bail, legal proceedings in the case are expected to move forward.
