Home Minister says Goa’s conviction rate rises to 53%; calls for stronger action against narcotics and cybercrime

Panaji, 6th Sept: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Sunday chaired a review meeting on issues related to Goa with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in Panaji.
The meeting reviewed law and order, implementation of the three Naveen Nyay Sanhitas, narcotics-related matters, coastal security, fugitives, disaster management, police modernisation, enemy properties and deportation of illegal migrants involved in crimes and narcotics offences.
Shah appreciated the efforts of the Goa Government and State Police in maintaining law and order and strengthening coastal security. He called for a comprehensive assessment of emerging security challenges and constant monitoring of crime trends, patterns, cross-linkages, inter-state movement of criminals and coastal security.
The Home Minister said all measures taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the state government should aim to make Goa the top state in the country in terms of law and order.
Goa officials informed Shah that violent crimes in the state are showing a declining trend, while cybercrime, narcotics-related offences and violations involving foreigners require stricter action.
The Goa DGP informed the meeting that following implementation of the three Naveen Nyay Sanhitas and effective use of the Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS), the state’s conviction rate has increased from 22% to 53%. In several cases, courts are now able to decide criminal matters within six to eight months.
Shah said the Modi Government is committed to providing smaller states with professional support in administrative matters, capacity building and development to achieve the goal of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
He said Goa has the potential to become a model state and expressed confidence that the state can achieve its security and development targets.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured that the state government would work under Shah’s guidance and coordinate closely with the Central Government to make Goa a model state in all aspects.
