New Delhi, 18th July: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah will perform the Bhoomi Pujan of the Amul Bengal Dairy Project, billed as the world’s largest curd production plant, in Kolkata on July 19, marking a major step towards strengthening India’s cooperative dairy sector under the vision of “Sahkar Se Samriddhi” and White Revolution 2.0.
The ₹700-crore project, being developed by Amul at the Howrah Food Park, will have the capacity to process 30 lakh litres of milk per day and produce 10 lakh kilograms of curd and other cultured dairy products daily upon completion.
According to the Ministry of Cooperation, the facility will also package 10 lakh litres of milk, process two lakh litres of UHT milk, manufacture one lakh litres of ice cream, 20 metric tonnes of paneer, 10 metric tonnes each of ghee and sweets, besides producing around 2.5 lakh packs of flavoured milk every day.
The project is expected to benefit more than 1.25 lakh milk-producing farmers across West Bengal, including over 30,000 women dairy farmers, by providing improved procurement, processing and marketing infrastructure, thereby enhancing their incomes through a stronger cooperative network.
During the programme, Amit Shah will also launch the e-RCS portal, aimed at digitising the registration and administration of cooperative societies in West Bengal to improve transparency and ease of access.
The Home Minister will lay the foundation stone for 14 grain storage warehouses with a combined capacity of 1,400 metric tonnes across 10 districts, being built under the world’s largest grain storage programme at a cost of ₹5.98 crore. He will also inaugurate two completed warehouses in South 24 Parganas and Cooch Behar.
In another key development, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between Bharat Taxi and the Department of Information Technology and Electronics, Government of West Bengal, to expand mobility services in the state through the cooperative framework.
Shah will also present registration certificates to representatives of more than 200 newly formed Dairy Cooperative Societies and 11 Multipurpose Rural Cooperative Societies, reinforcing the Centre’s efforts to expand the cooperative movement in West Bengal.
The government said the initiatives are expected to accelerate dairy development, strengthen rural infrastructure, promote digital governance in the cooperative sector and create new economic opportunities for farmers and rural communities.
