New Delhi, 4th Aug: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a red alert for Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours, while forecasting heavy to very heavy rain in several districts of Assam.
According to the weather department, an active monsoon system is expected to trigger intense rainfall across the Northeast, with districts in Upper Assam and adjoining areas likely to witness heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Authorities have advised residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant as the weather could trigger flash floods, landslides and disruption to road connectivity.
People have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in hilly regions, until weather conditions improve.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and district administrations have been placed on alert to respond to any emergency arising from the adverse weather conditions.
Officials are also closely monitoring water levels in major rivers and their tributaries, as continuous rainfall may lead to a rise in river levels and increase the risk of flooding.
The IMD has appealed to the public to follow official weather bulletins and safety advisories issued by local authorities.
With the monsoon remaining active over the region, authorities have advised residents to take necessary precautions until the spell of heavy rainfall subsides.
