Hyderabad, 8th June: Telangana Rakshana Sena chief K Kavitha on Monday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Revanth Reddy over the state’s proposed school rationalisation plan, alleging that the move would severely affect access to education, particularly for girls in rural areas.

Addressing the media, Kavitha criticised the government’s reported proposal to reduce the number of schools in the state from around 27,000 to 4,000.

“The Chief Minister says the existing 27,000 schools will now be brought down to 4,000. Even today, education hasn’t reached everyone in the state. This will also open up the doors for a lot of private players who will now set up schools at the village level,” she said.

Kavitha questioned the government’s plans for more than three lakh students currently enrolled in these institutions and claimed there was no clarity regarding their future.

She argued that the proposed restructuring would disproportionately affect girl students by making education less accessible.

“The Chief Minister isn’t Hitler, he is Taliban too. The way the Taliban imposes restrictions on the education of women, Revanth Reddy is making education inaccessible for girls in Telangana,” she alleged.

Her remarks come amid an ongoing controversy surrounding Revanth Reddy’s recent comments about the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA).

At an event in Bengaluru, the Chief Minister had referred to “Hydra” as Adolf Hitler’s favourite word and said he had taken inspiration from it while naming HYDRAA. The statement triggered criticism from opposition parties.

HYDRAA, established by the Telangana government in July 2024, is tasked with protecting government lands, lakes and public assets from encroachment and illegal occupation. The agency has undertaken several demolition drives against alleged illegal structures.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) intensified its criticism following the remarks. BRS Working President K T Rama Rao accused the Chief Minister of admiring authoritarian figures.

“Your inspiration is Hitler! Your assassination agency is HYDRAA! You worship dictators and brag about demolitions,” Rama Rao said in a post on X.

Former Chief Minister and BRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao has also opposed HYDRAA, stating that one of the first decisions of a future BRS government would be to dismantle the agency.

The latest exchange adds to the growing political confrontation between the ruling Congress government and the opposition BRS over governance, education and demolition policies in Telangana.
