Raichur, 21st Aug: A 21-year-old woman was allegedly kidnapped, raped and murdered in Karnataka’s Raichur district, with her body recovered from a well in an agricultural field a day after she went missing, police said.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered by Sirwar Police, the incident occurred on the evening of August 19 in Hokrani village. The complaint was lodged by the victim’s father, Thimmareddy.
Police said the victim, Ashwini, who had completed her Bachelor of Arts degree, returned home with her parents after working in the fields. Later in the evening, she reportedly stepped out carrying a water vessel to relieve herself on nearby government land after complaining of stomach pain.
When she did not return, her mother went looking for her and found her slippers and the water vessel lying near the spot. Family members searched for her throughout the night.
On the morning of August 20, villagers informed the family that a woman’s body had been found in a nearby well. The family identified the body as Ashwini.
According to the FIR, the victim had injuries on her face, including a torn upper lip and other lacerations. She was found unclothed and face down inside the well.
The FIR names four accused—Gundya (22), Mahanthesh (22), Veeresh (23) and Mundargi Basawaraj (around 45)—all residents of the same village.
Police have detained all four suspects for questioning. Officials said one of the suspects has reportedly confessed to involvement in the crime and will be produced before a court. The confession and all other evidence will be subject to judicial proceedings.
Investigators are probing the sequence of events and awaiting further forensic and medical examination reports to establish the exact circumstances surrounding Ashwini’s death.
According to police, Ashwini had been engaged about a month before the incident. The investigation is continuing.
