Mumbai, 13th April: The curtains came down on a golden era of Indian music as legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle was cremated with full state honours at Shivaji Park on Monday evening.

Fondly known as “Asha Tai,” the iconic singer passed away on April 12 at the age of 92 due to multi-organ failure following a cardiac arrest. She had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital a day earlier after suffering from extreme exhaustion and a chest infection.

State Farewell for a Legend
The Maharashtra government accorded her a state funeral, recognising her monumental contribution to Indian music. The ceremony mirrored the farewell given to her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, at the same venue.

Her mortal remains were kept at her residence in Lower Parel for public homage, where thousands of fans and several prominent personalities paid their last respects.

Leaders, Celebrities Pay Tribute
Several political leaders, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, along with ministers and senior leaders such as Raj Thackeray and Anil Desai, attended the funeral.

From the film industry, stars including Aamir Khan joined thousands of mourners in bidding farewell to the legendary singer.

The ceremony concluded with a 21-gun salute and a guard of honour by the Maharashtra Police.

Nation Mourns an Icon
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief, calling her musical journey extraordinary and her contribution to India’s cultural heritage unparalleled.

Tributes also poured in from leading film personalities, including Shah Rukh Khan, A. R. Rahman, and Hema Malini, who described her as an irreplaceable pillar of Indian cinema.

A Timeless Legacy
With a career spanning over eight decades, Asha Bhosle recorded more than 12,000 songs and was recognised by Guinness World Records as one of the most recorded artists in music history.

A recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and two National Film Awards, she mastered a wide range of genres—from classical ghazals like Dil Cheez Kya Hai to popular hits like Dum Maro Dum.

Her passing marks the end of an era, but her voice and legacy will continue to resonate across generations.
