Imphal, 15th April: Tension gripped Bishnupur district of Manipur on Wednesday after at least 18 people were injured in violent protests over the killing of two children in a recent bomb attack.

Protesters reportedly intercepted a vehicle on a highway, suspecting that armed individuals linked to insurgent groups were inside. The vehicle was set on fire, triggering clashes between demonstrators and security forces.

The occupants of the vehicle were later taken away by security personnel.

The protests quickly spread across the district, with demonstrators blocking key routes, including the Bishnupur–Churachandpur road and the highway leading to Imphal International Airport.

Commuters faced severe disruptions as traffic came to a standstill in several areas.

The unrest stems from outrage over the April 7 bomb attack in which a five-year-old boy and his infant sister were killed while asleep in their home.

The incident sparked widespread grief and anger, with protesters demanding immediate arrest of those responsible.

Earlier protests had also led to a face-off with the Central Reserve Police Force, during which firing resulted in three deaths and multiple injuries.

In a bid to curb misinformation and prevent further escalation, the state government suspended mobile internet services in five districts—Bishnupur, Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, and Kakching.

Authorities have intensified security deployment in sensitive areas and are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further violence.
