Chandigarh, 22nd April: Balkaur Singh, father of late singer Sidhu Moose Wala, has called for a ban on the upcoming web series ‘Lawrence of Punjab’, alleging that it glorifies criminal elements and could mislead the youth.

The demand comes amid a growing political and legal row over the series, which is scheduled for release on April 27 on ZEE5.

Earlier, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring wrote to the platform seeking immediate suspension or postponement of the release. He cited concerns over alleged violations of the IT Rules 2021 and warned of potential threats to public order.

Warring stated that promotional material indicates the series is based on the life of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who is facing multiple criminal cases. He argued that the portrayal risks promoting unlawful activities and may have a wider societal impact.

Raising objections to the content available on the series’ official webpage, the Congress leader said the subject matter is linked to a real individual involved in organised crime, and therefore requires strict legal scrutiny. He also warned that a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) would be filed if the series is not halted.

Joining the protest, Balkaur Singh questioned the relevance of showcasing a gangster’s life, asking what contribution such individuals have made to society. He said glorifying criminal figures could have a harmful effect on Punjab’s youth.

He further stated that Punjab has produced martyrs, scientists and sportspersons who should be highlighted instead. Calling for government intervention, Singh said promoting crime-based narratives is inappropriate at a time when many young people are already facing challenges.

The family also reiterated that they are yet to receive justice in the killing of Sidhu Moose Wala, alleging preferential treatment being given to the accused. Singh said he would approach the court if the series is released as scheduled.
