‘Naraaz Fufas’ Should Stay Happy: Kiren Rijiju

New Delhi, 19th Sept: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday said the establishment of a semiconductor facility in the Northeast would have been “unthinkable” a few years ago, and attributed its emergence to infrastructure and development initiatives under the Narendra Modi government.
Speaking at NDTV’s People’s Sansad with Padmaja Joshi, Rijiju said the Northeast’s young population has significant potential but has historically moved outside the region because of limited opportunities. He said the development of physical and social infrastructure could help integrate the region more closely with India’s wider economic growth.
“Imagine a semiconductor facility in the Northeast. This was unthinkable a few years back,” Rijiju said, adding that the combination of infrastructure, education, healthcare and employment opportunities would help create jobs and retain young people in the region.
Rijiju said highways have expanded connectivity, including in border areas, while airports and other infrastructure have also been developed. He added that the government was simultaneously working on what he described as “soft infrastructure” such as education, healthcare and opportunities for employment.
The minister told the largely student audience that young people in the Northeast should not have to leave the region for basic opportunities and expressed the expectation that states in the region would develop stronger economic activity.
On Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rijiju praised his discipline and focus and recalled the development of the Fit India movement during his tenure as Youth Affairs and Sports Minister. He also said the government had set the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047.
Rijiju also criticised the Opposition, referring to its leaders as “naraaz fufas” and saying there was no reason for political rivals to remain angry over electoral defeats. His remarks came during the same discussion on development and the political landscape.
India’s semiconductor push has expanded significantly in 2026, with the government highlighting new manufacturing, assembly, testing, design and research capabilities under the semiconductor programme. The Centre has also launched the next phase of the India Semiconductor Mission, with a focus on expanding the ecosystem.
