New Delhi, 28th Aug: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday condoled the death of Norway’s King Harald V, recalling his warmth and deep sense of service to the Norwegian people.

In a post on X, Modi said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of the Norwegian monarch and recalled meeting him during his visit to Norway earlier this year.

“I fondly recall meeting His Majesty during my visit to Norway earlier this year and was deeply touched by his warmth and profound sense of service to his nation,” Modi said.

He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family and the people of Norway.

King Harald V died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet at 6:35 am local time on Friday, August 28, according to the Norwegian Royal Palace. He was 89.

Harald had been Norway’s king since 1991 and was Europe’s oldest serving monarch. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre described his death as the end of an era, while praising the monarch’s warmth, commitment to Norway and role in bringing people together.

Harald’s son, Crown Prince Haakon, has succeeded him and will reign as King Haakon VIII. Norway has begun a period of national mourning following the monarch’s death.

King Harald was widely associated with a modernising Norwegian monarchy and was praised for his empathetic response during national tragedies, including the 2011 attacks. He also became known for his strong public commitment to inclusion and service.
