New Delhi, 13th Oct: Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand begins a visit to India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from October 13 to 16, with discussions expected to focus on trade, energy, defence, security and wider bilateral cooperation. The trip was announced by Global Affairs Canada on October 12 as Ottawa seeks to deepen engagement with both countries.

During her India visit, Anand is scheduled to meet External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to advance priorities under the bilateral roadmap. The agenda includes trade, energy, people-to-people ties, and security and defence cooperation. According to the Canadian government, this will be the 11th meeting between the two ministers since September 2025, reflecting sustained high-level diplomatic engagement.

Anand will also participate in the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, where she is expected to join a panel discussion on middle powers and the changing global order. Her participation will underline Canada’s stated emphasis on multilateral and plurilateral cooperation amid geopolitical uncertainty and its aim to strengthen its role as a partner in the Indo-Pacific.

The visit comes as India and Canada work to broaden economic engagement alongside diplomatic dialogue. Two-way trade between the countries reached 30.4 billion Canadian dollars in 2025, including 11 billion Canadian dollars in goods trade, according to figures published by Global Affairs Canada.

From India, Anand will travel to the UAE, where she is scheduled to meet Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Talks are expected to cover shared economic and security priorities, expanded commercial partnerships, and cooperation in defence, security, artificial intelligence and innovation. Meetings with senior government and business representatives are also planned.

The UAE leg will build on commitments made during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to the Emirates in November 2025. Ottawa has described that visit as a turning point in bilateral relations, with a roadmap for deeper cooperation in trade, investment, regional security and people-to-people connections.

Anand’s two-country tour highlights Canada’s efforts to strengthen partnerships across the Indo-Pacific and the Gulf at a time of geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty. The outcome of the meetings will be watched for concrete progress on the bilateral roadmaps and areas of practical cooperation.
