Twenty-two awardees to be honoured on National Handloom Day for contributions to India’s weaving traditions

New Delhi, 4th Aug: The President of India will present the Handloom Awards 2025 on August 7 as part of the National Handloom Day celebrations, recognising outstanding contributions towards preserving, promoting and advancing India’s handloom traditions.
A total of 22 awardees, including three recipients of the Sant Kabir Handloom Award and 19 recipients of the National Handloom Award, will be honoured at the ceremony, the Ministry of Textiles said on Tuesday.
Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, senior government officials, master weavers, designers, exporters, artisans and representatives of the handloom industry are expected to attend the event.
Awards Recognise Handloom Excellence
The Ministry of Textiles has announced the Sant Kabir Handloom Awards and National Handloom Awards for 2025 to recognise achievements across weaving, innovation, design development, marketing initiatives, startups and producer companies associated with the handloom sector.
Instituted under the Handloom Marketing Assistance component of the National Handloom Development Programme, the awards represent national recognition for excellence across the handloom ecosystem.
The government said the awards aim to encourage craftsmanship, innovation and sustained commitment while recognising the adoption of modern techniques without compromising traditional skills.
They also acknowledge contributions towards product diversification, design innovation, market outreach and the socio-economic development of weaving communities.
Sant Kabir Award Highest Recognition for Weavers
The Sant Kabir Handloom Award is the country’s highest recognition for handloom weavers demonstrating exceptional craftsmanship and lifelong commitment to preserving and promoting India’s weaving traditions.
Recipients are selected on the basis of technical skill, innovation, sustained contribution, promotion of traditional weaving practices, mentoring of artisans and community development.
The award comprises a mounted gold coin, Tamrapatra, shawl and certificate.
The National Handloom Award, meanwhile, recognises weavers and other stakeholders for outstanding creativity, quality, innovation and excellence. Recipients are presented with a Tamrapatra, shawl and certificate.
According to the Ministry, awardees in the weaving category undergo a multi-level evaluation involving Zonal, Headquarters and Central Level Selection Committees. Nominations in design development, marketing, startup and producer company categories are evaluated by Headquarters and Central Level committees before final approval.
The government said the selection mechanism is designed to ensure transparency and recognise genuine excellence across different segments of India’s handloom sector.
