Imphal, 18th April: Two men, including a retired Indian Army soldier, were killed in a firing incident on a highway in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Friday, officials said, in an attack that has raised fresh concerns over peace efforts in the state.

The victims, identified as SW Chinaoshang (46) and Yaruingam Vashum (42), both residents of Ukhrul and belonging to the Naga community, were travelling from Imphal to Ukhrul when their vehicle came under gunfire.

Officials said the firing took place in the afternoon and also targeted two other vehicles, causing damage and panic among commuters.

Sources indicated that the attack appeared aimed at disrupting ongoing peace initiatives in the region.

Security forces have launched a combing operation to track down the attackers. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

The Kuki-Zo Council denied any involvement, while the Working Committee of Tangkhul Naga Long alleged that “Kuki SoO cadres” were behind the attack, claiming it was carried out using snipers after security escort withdrawal.

Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh condemned the attack, calling for strict action and accountability.

“Such acts strike at the very sense of safety our people deserve,” he said, urging a coordinated crackdown while ensuring civilian protection.

The incident comes just a day after Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited the district, appealing for peace, reconciliation and normalcy.

It also follows recent violence in the state, including the killing of two children in a bomb attack in Bishnupur, which had triggered widespread protests.

Manipur has witnessed prolonged ethnic tensions, with violence since 2023 claiming over 260 lives.
