London, 1st April: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Wednesday made it clear that the United Kingdom will not be drawn into the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran, asserting that “this is not our war.”
Addressing a press conference at Downing Street, Starmer said that while the UK will act responsibly amid global tensions, it will not enter a conflict that does not align with its national interests.
“Whatever the pressure… I am going to act in the British national interest,” he said, underlining that the government’s priority remains safeguarding the country’s stability and security.
At the same time, the Prime Minister clarified that Britain is not stepping aside from global responsibilities. He emphasised continued diplomatic engagement and coordination with international partners to manage the crisis.
Defending the role of NATO, Starmer described it as the “most successful military alliance in history,” in response to criticism from Donald Trump, who recently labelled the alliance a “paper tiger.”
Starmer also highlighted the urgency of securing global energy and trade routes, announcing that Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper will lead international discussions aimed at reopening and safeguarding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Acknowledging the challenges ahead, he warned that resolving the crisis would not be easy and stressed the importance of stronger ties with European allies as tensions escalate.
The remarks come amid rising geopolitical uncertainty in West Asia, with global powers weighing their strategic positions as the conflict deepens.
