Surendranagar (Gujarat), 13th April: At least seven people, including six pilgrims, were killed in a devastating road accident after a speeding truck ran over them on a highway in Gujarat’s Surendranagar district late Sunday night.
The victims were part of a group travelling on foot from Gadhka village in Rajkot to a temple in Dekawala. The incident occurred on the Lakhtar-Viramgam Highway near Bhaskarpara when the pilgrims were attempting to pass a stationary dumper parked on the roadside for a tyre change.
According to police, a speeding truck rammed into the group from behind, hitting around ten people. The impact was so severe that six pilgrims died on the spot.
The dumper driver, who was also struck in the collision, later succumbed to injuries during treatment at a hospital in Viramgam.
Officials said the force of the collision was extremely intense, with authorities having to use shovels to collect remains of some victims, underlining the severity of the crash.
Passers-by alerted police, who rushed to the spot and initiated rescue and recovery operations.
Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident, including whether speeding or negligence was involved.
