Guwahati, 4th May: The Bharatiya Janata Party strengthened its position in Assam with major victories and leads in key constituencies, including a high-profile win by Pradyut Bordoloi in Dispur.
Bordoloi, who switched from the Congress to the BJP shortly before the elections, secured a decisive victory with over 1 lakh votes, defeating Congress candidate Mira Borthakur Goswami by a margin of 49,667 votes.
A veteran politician with decades in the Congress, Bordoloi’s win is being seen as a significant political shift in the state’s electoral dynamics.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma established a massive lead of over 80,000 votes in the Jalukbari constituency, positioning himself for a sixth consecutive term.
The BJP has already secured over 20 seats, consolidating its dominance in the 126-member Assembly, while the Congress continues to trail.
In another key result, an AIUDF candidate registered a win in Dalgaon, adding a solitary victory for the party.
The Congress also suffered a major setback in Jorhat, where its leader Gaurav Gogoi lost to BJP’s Hitendranath Goswami in his first Assembly contest.
With trends continuing to favour the BJP across regions, the party appears set to retain power comfortably in Assam.
