THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, 16th May: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor will miss the swearing-in ceremony of V. D. Satheesan on Monday as he travels to the United States to attend an event at his alma mater.
In a social media post on Friday, Tharoor said he would be in Boston to deliver the commencement address at the graduation ceremony of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
The Congress leader also said he would participate in the 50th anniversary reunion of his graduating class.
“An occasion for celebrating the past in the US even as I look forward to the future in Kerala,” Tharoor wrote in a post on X, triggering political discussion over the message and its timing.
Kerala is preparing for the swearing-in ceremony of Satheesan as Chief Minister in Thiruvananthapuram following the Congress-led United Democratic Front’s electoral victory.
Despite his absence from the ceremony, Tharoor’s political visibility within the Indian National Congress has grown considerably in recent months.
During the Kerala Assembly election campaign, Tharoor emerged as one of the Congress party’s most in-demand campaigners, with candidates across the state reportedly seeking his presence at public meetings.
The Thiruvananthapuram MP travelled extensively across Kerala, addressing large gatherings and attracting significant crowds, especially among youth and urban voters.
His speeches, known for their polished delivery and sharp political messaging, drew enthusiastic responses at campaign events across the state.
Within Congress circles, there is increasing recognition that Tharoor’s appeal now extends beyond his parliamentary constituency, providing the party with a nationally recognisable face capable of energising party workers and undecided voters alike.
