Chennai, 25th May: A 17-year-old boy was allegedly murdered by a five-member gang in the parking area of the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, triggering a political confrontation over the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu.
According to the Madurai City Police, preliminary investigations suggest the murder was linked to an old enmity stemming from a clash during the recently concluded Chithirai festival.
Police officials said the teenager was attacked by a gang of five in the temple parking area. Further investigation into the incident is currently underway.
The murder sparked sharp criticism from K. Annamalai, who targeted the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government led by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay.
In a post on X, Annamalai alleged that criminals were operating freely in the state and accused the government of failing to address ground realities.
“Drug peddlers, sexual assaulters, and murderers have a free pass in Tamil Nadu. The State police seem to have learnt no lessons from the past, and the new TVK government is yet to emerge from its celebratory mode and confront the grim realities unfolding on the ground,” he said.
The incident has intensified the political debate over public safety and policing in Tamil Nadu shortly after the formation of the new TVK-led government.
Police are examining CCTV footage and gathering evidence to trace all suspects involved in the murder.
