New Delhi, 27th June: Strong earthquake tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR, Jammu and Kashmir and several other north Indian states on Saturday evening after a powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 7:04 pm IST with its epicentre in Afghanistan at a depth of 215 kilometres. The agency recorded the quake at latitude 36.442°N and longitude 70.672°E.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicentre was located about 43 kilometres south of Jurm in northeastern Afghanistan.

The tremors were also felt in Kabul and the eastern Afghan provinces of Khost and Nangarhar, while neighbouring Pakistan reported shaking in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Swat, Hangu, North Waziristan and Chitral.

In Delhi-NCR, the tremors prompted many residents to rush out of homes and office buildings as a precaution. Similar reports of panic were received from parts of northern India.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage in India.

The latest tremor comes months after a similar earthquake in Afghanistan sent shockwaves across Delhi-NCR and several northern states earlier this year.
