New Delhi, 18th July: Educator and activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to a hospital by Delhi Police in the early hours of Friday after his health deteriorated during a 20-day hunger strike at Jantar Mantar over the alleged NEET paper leak and demands for greater accountability in the education system.

Police removed Wangchuk from the protest site, describing the move as necessary to provide essential medical care, and asked protesters to vacate the area.

The action came a day after doctors warned that Wangchuk’s condition had become critical, raising concerns about possible organ failure. Earlier, the Delhi High Court had directed authorities to do “anything and everything” necessary to protect his life.

Wangchuk began his indefinite fast on June 28, backing a protest against alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and calling for reforms to ensure transparency and accountability in national competitive examinations. The demonstration also highlighted issues concerning Ladakh.

Over the course of the protest, doctors reported a steady decline in his health, including significant weight loss and falling blood glucose levels. His condition drew widespread public attention, with students, activists and political leaders visiting the protest site in support.

On the final day of his fast at Jantar Mantar, Wangchuk had announced that he intended to continue his protest until Parliament resumed its Monsoon Session and planned to lead a peaceful march towards Parliament.

The Delhi High Court, while hearing a public interest litigation earlier this week, had questioned the lack of medical oversight and directed the authorities to ensure Wangchuk’s safety.

The protest site was cleared after Wangchuk was taken to hospital, while his supporters continued to demand action on the alleged NEET paper leak and broader reforms in the education sector.
