New Delhi, 20th Aug: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met Japan’s Minister of Defence Shinjiro Koizumi, who is on an official visit to India, and discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral defence cooperation and expand strategic ties between the two countries.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi recalled his detailed discussions with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit held in July 2026 and appreciated the steady progress in defence collaboration between the two nations.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed his vision of strengthening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, underscoring the importance of closer defence and security cooperation in promoting peace, stability and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

Modi also highlighted opportunities for Japanese companies to partner with Indian firms and start-ups in the defence sector through co-development and co-production under the Make in India initiative. He emphasised that enhanced industrial collaboration would further deepen bilateral strategic cooperation while supporting India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.

During the meeting, Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi briefed the Prime Minister on the progress made in bilateral defence cooperation and reaffirmed the Japanese government’s commitment to further strengthening defence and security ties with India.

The discussions reflected the continued momentum in the India-Japan strategic partnership, with both countries seeking to expand cooperation in defence, security and advanced manufacturing while contributing to a free, open and stable Indo-Pacific region.
