New Delhi, 20th Aug: The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the establishment of a bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir in Ladakh, a move aimed at improving access to justice for residents of the Union Territory, particularly those living in remote and far-flung regions. The decision is expected to reduce the need for litigants and lawyers to travel long distances for court proceedings while strengthening judicial accessibility in Ladakh.

Welcoming the decision, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah said the Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had taken a “historic decision” to enable the sitting of a bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir in Ladakh.

In a post on X, Shah said the new High Court bench would significantly enhance access to justice by reducing the time and effort required for citizens in remote areas to avail legal services. He added that the government remained fully committed to the all-round development of Ladakh and to ensuring constitutional safeguards for its people.

The approval comes as Ladakh continues to seek stronger institutional infrastructure following its reorganisation as a Union Territory in 2019. The establishment of a High Court bench is expected to improve the delivery of judicial services and make legal remedies more accessible for residents across the region.

The decision also aligns with the Centre’s broader efforts to strengthen governance, public institutions and essential infrastructure in Ladakh, with a focus on ensuring efficient public service delivery in one of India’s most geographically challenging regions.
