New Delhi, 25th Aug: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held discussions in Tokyo with senior representatives of leading Japanese financial institutions, seeking greater long-term Japanese investment in India.

Representatives of MUFG, Development Bank of Japan, Mizuho, Morgan Stanley, Nomura and Nippon Life participated in the discussions on expanding institutional investment and strengthening India-Japan economic ties.

Goyal highlighted India’s economic growth and investment potential, noting that the country recorded 7.7 per cent growth last year despite global uncertainties. He projected India’s ambition of becoming a USD 30 trillion economy by 2047.

The Minister identified semiconductors, artificial intelligence, data centres, renewable energy, green hydrogen, advanced manufacturing and digital infrastructure as key areas of opportunity for Japanese investors.

He also highlighted India’s banking-sector strength, expanding middle class, rising incomes, policy reforms and growing renewable-energy capacity.

Japanese financial institutions expressed confidence in India’s long-term prospects and outlined their expanding investments and operations in the country. They also sought greater ease in capital flows, profit repatriation and access to Indian capital markets.

The discussions also examined the potential of GIFT City as a platform for facilitating cross-border investment between India and Japan.

Goyal said India was seeking more than capital, emphasising the importance of partnerships that bring technology, innovation, manufacturing capabilities, employment and integration with global value chains.

The engagement assumes significance as India and Japan aim to mobilise 10 trillion yen in Japanese private investment into India over the next decade.

The meeting reaffirmed the growing confidence of Japanese investors in India and provided further momentum to bilateral investment and economic cooperation.
