Guwahati, 6th Sept: Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Sunday attended the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Geetanagar College, formerly known as Kanya Mahavidyalaya, in Guwahati and inaugurated its new academic building.
Congratulating the institution on completing five decades, Radhakrishnan said the college has contributed significantly to Assam’s educational and social development, particularly by empowering generations of young women through education and confidence.
Highlighting Assam’s rich cultural heritage, the Vice-President recalled the valour and patriotism of Lachit Borphukan, describing his legacy as an enduring source of inspiration.
Radhakrishnan said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accorded high priority to the development of the Northeast. He highlighted Assam’s natural resources, forests and tea industry, and said the state is witnessing a significant phase of development and transformation.
He stressed that higher education institutions should not only prepare students for careers but also nurture responsible citizens committed to democracy, constitutional values, social responsibility and nation-building.
The Vice-President led students and other attendees in taking a ‘No to Drugs’ pledge and urged young people to stay away from drugs and encourage their peers to make responsible choices.
He also highlighted opportunities for India’s youth in artificial intelligence, digital technology, biotechnology, space research and entrepreneurship, saying these sectors can enable them to contribute to building a developed India.
Radhakrishnan appreciated Assam’s progress under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and highlighted investments in healthcare, education, infrastructure, employment, disaster management and tea-garden communities.
The Vice-President is on a four-day visit to Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh from September 6 to 9. During his Assam visit, he will also attend the convocation of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences and programmes at Gauhati University.
