Chandigarh, 3rd Oct: The Congress has appointed former Indian hockey captain and Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, replacing Amarinder Singh Raja Warring after his resignation.

Pargat Singh’s appointment comes ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections and at a time when the state Congress is seeking to address organisational differences and bring its various groups together. Congress leaders have described the choice as one that could help the party manage competing interests within the state unit.

The appointment also brings Singh’s long sporting career into the political spotlight. He represented India at three Olympic Games and captained the national hockey team at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympics, according to Hockey India.

Singh is also remembered for his performances in international hockey, including the 1985 Champions Trophy in Perth. Accounts of the tournament record that he scored four goals in the final six minutes as India came back from 1-5 against Germany to draw the match.

After his hockey career, Singh entered politics. He joined the Shiromani Akali Dal before moving to the Congress in 2016 and has represented Jalandhar Cantonment in the Punjab Assembly. He also served as Punjab’s education and sports minister during the Charanjit Singh Channi government.

His elevation follows Warring’s resignation after he met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Delhi. Warring had headed the Punjab Congress since 2022.

Congress general secretary in-charge of Punjab Sachin Pilot has also congratulated Singh on his appointment. The party’s immediate organisational challenge will be to coordinate its different leadership groups as preparations begin for the next Assembly election.

Singh’s political background and experience as a former national team captain have now become central to the narrative around his new role. The task ahead is to lead the state organisation, coordinate its leadership and prepare the party for the 2027 electoral contest.
