New Delhi, 16th Oct: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke has claimed that Delhi Police may detain him ahead of the party’s planned ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ protests in New Delhi and Mumbai on Friday. He alleged that Intelligence Bureau personnel were monitoring him and that vehicles without number plates had been following him, though these claims have not been independently verified.
Speaking to the media late Thursday night, Dipke said he was prepared to go to jail for waving the national flag. He maintained that the party would proceed peacefully despite the possibility of detention.
“Delhi Police can detain me tonight or tomorrow morning, but we are not going to be scared by this,” he said, adding that the party was demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and an independent process for appointing a replacement. He denied that the demand was aimed at changing the government.
The CJP has called for a gathering at Central Park in Connaught Place at 5 pm on Friday to protest alleged irregularities in the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. The New Delhi Municipal Council has announced that Central Park will remain closed on October 16 and 17.
Security has been tightened in Connaught Place, with around 6,000 Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel deployed. Police have urged the public not to join the gathering, citing prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). They said only a group of 11 people would be permitted to carry the national flag and sing the national anthem at a suitable location in Central Park.
The Delhi High Court declined to restrain the protest, recording the police’s assurance that the gathering would be regulated. Meanwhile, the CJP has also planned a protest at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan from 10 am to 5 pm, for which Mumbai Police have granted permission.
The demonstrations follow the arrest of CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, who were sent to five days of judicial custody after allegedly trespassing at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and raising slogans demanding Kumar’s resignation.
