New Delhi, 16th Oct: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday raised concerns over the law and order situation in Punjab, citing the growing threats of drug trafficking, gangsterism and organised crime. He said the Centre would seek a response from the state government over two recent incidents that have sparked questions about public safety.
In a post on X, Shah referred to an incident in Dirba in which a father allegedly consumed poison under pressure, as well as the broad-daylight murder of Parvinder Singh Jhota in Mansa. Jhota had reportedly been raising his voice against drugs. Shah said the incidents had raised serious questions about law and order in the state.
The Home Minister also referred to allegations made by Jhota’s father against the Punjab government and a local MLA. He said the Ministry of Home Affairs would seek the state government’s response on both incidents.
Shah alleged that the drug trade continued to flourish while organised crime posed a growing threat. He also questioned the safety of people speaking out against drugs and called for a decisive crackdown on drug networks.
Addressing Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Shah said people wanted answers and concrete results rather than publicity and announcements. He called for an impartial investigation into any alleged political patronage extended to criminals.
Shah said the Centre’s stated priorities were to curb drug trafficking, protect young people, take strict action against criminals and ensure that citizens could live without fear. The allegations surrounding the two incidents and any alleged political links remain subject to investigation and the state government’s response.
