Patna, 17th Oct: Janata Dal (United) MLA Anant Kumar Singh has triggered a political storm in Bihar after claiming that he arranged the killings of nine people to help former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar during his political struggles. The JDU has distanced itself from the remarks, while the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has demanded political accountability.

Singh made the statement while criticising the JDU’s decision to field his political rival Neeraj Kumar in the upcoming Bihar Legislative Council elections. Expressing frustration over the nomination, Singh referred to his long association with Nitish Kumar and claimed he had made significant sacrifices to support him.

“Nitish Kumar and I go back a long way. To help him, I got nine people murdered. I stood by him in times when he was struggling to find a toehold,” Singh said.

The remarks prompted a sharp response from the RJD. Party leader Shakti Singh Yadav alleged that Singh’s statement amounted to an admission of serious criminal acts and accused Nitish Kumar of maintaining political links with people associated with criminal gangs. These were allegations made by the opposition and were not established by the remarks alone.

The JDU rejected the controversy surrounding Singh’s comments. National spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad said the statement did not deserve serious consideration, adding that Nitish Kumar had maintained an unblemished record and had no association with criminal activity or violence.

Singh subsequently changed his account, blaming the killings on the government led by RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav. He claimed that nine of his associates had been killed during that period and that he himself had been shot. Singh said these incidents occurred because he and his associates had aligned themselves with Nitish Kumar. His revised account differed from his earlier statement.

The political confrontation comes ahead of the biennial elections to eight seats in the Bihar Legislative Council. Polling is scheduled for October 23, with counting set for October 27, adding to the political tension surrounding the rivalries within the state’s political parties.
