Kolkata, 4th May: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee staged a comeback in the Bhabanipur constituency on Monday morning, taking a lead over her key rival Suvendu Adhikari as counting for the 2026 Assembly elections gathered pace.

The Bhabanipur contest has emerged as a high-profile battleground, with Banerjee seeking to reaffirm her political authority after her defeat to Adhikari in Nandigram during the previous election.

Adhikari, who had earlier unseated Banerjee in a closely fought contest, is currently leading again from Nandigram, sustaining pressure on the Trinamool leadership.

Bhabanipur, considered a traditional stronghold of the Trinamool Congress since 2011, holds symbolic importance for Banerjee, who had earlier secured her Assembly membership from the seat through a by-election.

Meanwhile, early statewide trends suggest a major political shift, with the Bharatiya Janata Party crossing the majority mark in the 294-member Assembly.

As per early figures, the BJP is leading in over 150 seats, placing it on course for a potential historic victory in West Bengal, while the Trinamool Congress trails behind.

The election, conducted in two phases on April 23 and 29, witnessed an intense campaign marked by sharp political exchanges and allegations of poll irregularities from both sides.

The evolving trends signal a high-stakes contest that could reshape West Bengal’s political landscape after more than a decade of Trinamool dominance.
