Chandigarh, 28th May: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday appointed Archana Gupta as the new president of its Haryana unit, making her the second woman to head the party in the state after more than four decades.

A doctor by profession, Gupta is currently serving as the BJP’s Haryana general secretary. She succeeds Mohan Lal Badoli in the role.

Veteran BJP leader Kamla Verma was the first woman president of the party’s Haryana unit and served from 1980 to 1983.

The appointments were announced by BJP National President Nitin Nabin through notifications issued by party national general secretary Arun Singh.

Along with Gupta’s appointment, Kewal Singh Dhillon was named president of the BJP’s Punjab unit, Abhishek Debroy was appointed chief of the Tripura unit and Union Minister Harsh Malhotra was made the BJP’s Delhi unit president.

Reacting to her appointment, Gupta thanked the party leadership for entrusting her with the responsibility and said the BJP has consistently worked towards giving equal opportunities to women.

Speaking to reporters in Panipat, she criticised the Congress and other opposition parties, alleging that they had opposed amendments related to women’s reservation in legislatures.

Gupta also thanked senior BJP leaders including Nayab Singh Saini, Om Prakash Dhankar, Subhash Barala and Mohan Lal Badoli for strengthening the party organisation in Haryana.

“Strengthening the party further will be one of my focus areas. I will also work to increase women’s participation in various spheres and take more steps for their empowerment,” Gupta said.
