New Delhi, 13th Oct: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has mocked Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge over their use of Batman masks during an Opposition protest in Delhi, turning a symbolic gesture against the Election Commission of India (ECI) into a fresh political exchange.
The incident took place during the INDIA bloc’s march in central Delhi, where opposition leaders demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. During the demonstration, a group of young people wearing Batman masks caught Rahul Gandhi’s attention. The Congress leader put on a mask while travelling in a bus with party president Mallikarjun Kharge and also helped the senior leader wear one.
Union Minister Jayant Singh took a swipe at the gesture in a post on X, saying, “Delhi isn’t Gotham, and we don’t need a dark superhero and Robin.” His remark drew on Gotham City, the fictional setting of the Batman stories, which is often depicted as a crime-ridden metropolis. The BJP’s criticism suggested that the symbolism was misplaced in the context of the Opposition’s campaign against the voter roll revision exercise.
The episode also revived attention to Rahul Gandhi’s earlier interaction with young people on Instagram in August. Asked whether he was Batman during an outreach session focused on students and Gen-Z, Gandhi responded humorously: “Let’s just say that no one has ever seen me and Batman in the same room together.”
Following the latest incident, posters describing Rahul Gandhi as “The Real Life Batman” reportedly appeared at Congress offices in central Delhi. The episode added a lighter, social-media-driven dimension to the ongoing political confrontation over the SIR exercise, even as opposition parties continue to question the Election Commission’s process.
The Congress and the INDIA bloc have demanded accountability from the poll body, while the BJP has criticised the opposition’s protest strategy. The dispute over electoral roll revision remains the central issue behind the demonstrations.
