Chennai, 18th Aug: A fresh political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) criticised Chief Minister Vijay over actor Trisha Krishnan’s presence during the Independence Day celebrations at Fort St. George in Chennai.

In an editorial published in the party’s official mouthpiece Murasoli, the DMK questioned the seating arrangement that placed Trisha in the front row alongside Vijay’s parents, S.A. Chandrasekhar and Shobha Chandrasekhar, during the official state function.

The editorial also took exception to visuals showing the actor saluting the Chief Minister as he passed during the ceremonial proceedings. It alleged that the exchange of salutes and the front-row seating diminished the dignity of the official Independence Day event.

Without naming Trisha directly, the editorial claimed that even some supporters of Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) would find the scene difficult to accept, arguing that official state ceremonies should maintain institutional decorum.

Videos from the event, which have gone viral on social media, showed several people seated in the front row, including Vijay’s family members and supporters, saluting the Chief Minister during the ceremony.

The TVK has not issued an official response to the DMK’s criticism.

The controversy comes months after Trisha attended Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony as Chief Minister and amid continued public speculation over their personal relationship, which neither has publicly addressed.

The editorial also criticised Vijay’s Independence Day speech, alleging that his appeal for continued public support reflected concerns about sustaining his government’s popularity. During the celebrations, Vijay had greeted the people on the 80th Independence Day and reiterated his government’s commitment to eliminating bribery and corruption while thanking citizens for the opportunity to serve as Chief Minister.

The latest exchange marks another round of political sparring between the ruling TVK government and the opposition DMK, with the Independence Day event becoming the centre of a fresh political debate.
