Guwahati, 4th May: Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi suffered a significant defeat in his maiden Assembly election contest, losing the Jorhat seat to Hitendra Nath Goswami by a margin of over 20,000 votes.

The result comes just days after Gogoi had dismissed exit poll projections, which ultimately proved accurate as counting trends showed the Bharatiya Janata Party securing a strong victory in the state.

According to trends, the BJP is poised to form the government with close to 100 seats in the 126-member Assembly, while the Congress lagged far behind.

Goswami, a seasoned leader and multiple-term MLA, consolidated his hold over Jorhat, marking another consecutive victory from the constituency.

Despite Gogoi’s strong parliamentary presence—having won the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat in 2024—his Assembly bid failed to translate into electoral success.

Political observers say the Congress struggled to rebuild its traditional support among key communities in Upper Assam, including the Ahom community, tea tribes and minority voters.

The outcome shows BJP’s continued dominance in Assam and highlights the Congress party’s ongoing challenges in regaining political ground in the region.
