Govt Declares 23 More Individuals as Terrorists Under UAPA

New Delhi, 4th July: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Saturday designated 23 more individuals as terrorists under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah saying the Centre remains committed to dismantling every terror module to safeguard India’s security.

The newly designated individuals include 17 Pakistani nationals and six Indian nationals, all of whom are currently operating from Pakistan or Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). According to the government, they are linked to banned terrorist organisations and are involved in terror attacks, cross-border infiltration, arms smuggling, recruitment, financing and anti-India activities.

In a post on X, Shah said the action reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of zero tolerance against terrorism. He said the designated terrorists have been notified under the provisions of the UAPA for their involvement in promoting terrorism, facilitating infiltration, trafficking arms and supporting terrorist organisations.

The Home Ministry said the decision will help curb the financial networks, movement, recruitment and operational capabilities of the designated terrorists while enabling security agencies to take coordinated legal, investigative and preventive action at the national and international levels.

With the latest notification, the total number of individuals designated as terrorists under Section 35 of the UAPA has increased to 80, following the 2019 amendment that empowered the government to notify individuals as terrorists.

The designated individuals are affiliated with terrorist organisations including Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jamaat-ud-Dawa, The Resistance Front and other proscribed groups, according to the MHA.
