Sanand, 4th July: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the CG Semi Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, describing it as a major milestone in India’s semiconductor journey and a significant step towards technological self-reliance.

Addressing the gathering, Modi said the facility would strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem and enhance the country’s position in the global semiconductor value chain. He said the Semicon India programme is gathering rapid momentum with a vision to build a complete semiconductor ecosystem from chip design to fabrication and packaging.

The Prime Minister said the growth of the semiconductor sector is the next phase of India’s electronics revolution, which has evolved over the past decade from manufacturing finished products to components and now semiconductors. He said this roadmap would accelerate the vision of Viksit Bharat and strengthen the Make in India initiative.

Modi said the facility has progressed rapidly from the laying of its foundation stone in 2024 to commercial chip packaging, reflecting India’s ability to translate ambitious goals into reality. He also highlighted the collaboration between Indian, Japanese and Thai partners, describing it as a model of international technological cooperation.

The Prime Minister said the Sanand semiconductor cluster would create a robust ecosystem by attracting design centres, testing laboratories, chemical manufacturers and startups, generating employment and strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Highlighting India’s achievements in electronics manufacturing, Modi said the country has emerged as the world’s second-largest producer and exporter of mobile phones. He added that electronics production has increased nearly sevenfold since 2014, while exports have grown more than eleven times.

Modi said the government’s objective is to develop the complete electronics value chain, from chip design and fabrication to packaging, while also building domestic capabilities in critical materials and supply chains.

The Prime Minister said India’s youth would play a central role in advancing Artificial Intelligence, robotics and other next-generation technologies using Made-in-India semiconductor chips. He urged young professionals to continuously acquire new skills to seize emerging opportunities in the semiconductor and AI sectors.

He also praised the participation of women, including those from tribal communities, who have received advanced technical training and are contributing to semiconductor manufacturing at the new facility.
