Shimla, 14th June: Union Communications and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on Saturday announced the launch of a drone-based mail and parcel transmission service by the Department of Posts in Himachal Pradesh, marking a major step towards technology-driven modernization of postal services.

The service became operational on June 12 and currently connects the Mandi Head Post Office with the Rehardhar Branch Post Office in Himachal Pradesh.

According to the Ministry of Communications, the initiative was conceived following interactions between the Union Minister and Gramin Dak Sevaks as well as Postal Assistants, who highlighted the need for faster and more efficient connectivity in remote and difficult terrains.

Guided by Scindia’s vision of leveraging technology to strengthen public service delivery, the Department of Posts has identified nearly 150 routes across Himachal Pradesh and Assam for drone-based mail transmission over the next two to three months.

The Mandi-Rehardhar route is the first to operationalise the programme.

Rehardhar Branch Post Office is located approximately 12 kilometres from Mandi Head Post Office. Under conventional transport arrangements, mail delivery between the two locations takes more than two hours due to challenging terrain and road conditions.

With the deployment of drones, the transit time has been reduced dramatically to about seven minutes.

Officials said the new system will help overcome geographical barriers while ensuring faster movement of mail and parcels. The service also enables real-time tracking and offers an environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional transportation methods.

The Department of Posts expects the initiative to significantly improve postal connectivity in remote and mountainous regions, ensuring quicker access to essential services for local communities.

The ministry said the project is aimed at enhancing service delivery, strengthening last-mile connectivity and promoting greater social and economic inclusion in difficult-to-reach areas.

The drone-based delivery network forms part of the government’s broader effort to integrate advanced technologies into public service infrastructure and improve accessibility for citizens living in remote locations.
