Mumbai, 2nd May: The mysterious deaths of a Mumbai family of four, initially linked to suspected contaminated watermelon consumption, have taken a more complex turn as forensic findings now suggest possible poisoning rather than routine food contamination.
Abdullah Dokadia, his wife and their two daughters reportedly fell critically ill after consuming food and watermelon late at night, developing severe vomiting and diarrhoea before dying within hours.
Preliminary forensic examinations have reportedly revealed unusual internal organ discoloration, including greenish changes in critical organs, raising suspicions of toxic substance exposure.
Investigators have also detected morphine in Abdullah Dokadia’s body, prompting deeper scrutiny into whether medical intervention, accidental ingestion or deliberate poisoning may have been involved.
Officials from Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration have clarified that no direct scientific evidence currently links watermelon to the fatalities.
Authorities are investigating multiple angles, including food adulteration, toxic contamination and broader personal or psychological factors.
Statements from relatives who attended the same dinner but remained unharmed have also become central to the investigation.
Autopsy teams have reserved final conclusions pending comprehensive chemical and viscera analysis.
The case has triggered widespread public concern, misinformation and scrutiny over food safety practices, while investigators continue working to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.
