New Delhi, 28th May: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday paid floral tributes to Vinayak Damodar Savarkar in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan on the occasion of his birth anniversary.
Several Union Ministers, Members of Parliament and former MPs also joined the tribute ceremony to honour Veer Savarkar’s contribution to India’s freedom movement and social reform efforts.
Among those present were Union Health Minister JP Nadda, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal and BJP National President Nitin Nabin.
Veer Savarkar, born on May 28, 1883, is remembered as a prominent revolutionary, poet, writer and social reformer who played a major role in India’s struggle against British colonial rule.
He founded revolutionary organisations aimed at mobilising youth for the freedom movement and endured imprisonment at the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Apart from his revolutionary activities, Savarkar was also known for advocating rationalism, social reform and modernisation in Indian society.
The portrait of Veer Savarkar displayed in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan was painted by Chandrakala Kumar Kadam and officially unveiled on February 26, 2003, by former President APJ Abdul Kalam.
