Hyderabad, 10th June: At least two persons were electrocuted and widespread traffic disruptions were reported across Hyderabad as heavy southwest monsoon rains lashed Telangana, causing waterlogging, flooding and safety concerns in several parts of the city.

The fatalities occurred in Hyderabad’s Mylardevpally area on Tuesday evening after a low-tension streetlight cable was allegedly damaged during drain excavation work and fell onto a rainwater-filled road.

According to officials, the live electrical wire remained submerged in accumulated rainwater, creating a deadly hazard for pedestrians and motorists.

The victims, identified as Jaffer and Abu, residents of Chandrayangutta, had arrived at the location in an auto-rickshaw. As they stepped out of the vehicle, they unknowingly entered the waterlogged stretch where the live cable was lying and suffered severe electric shocks.

Both men collapsed on the spot and died despite rescue attempts by local residents.

Local MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi visited the bereaved families and assured them that the matter would be taken up with the concerned authorities.

Following the incident, officials were advised to carry out urgent inspections of electrical installations and exposed cables across the city to prevent similar accidents during the ongoing monsoon season.

The heavy rainfall also caused extensive waterlogging in several parts of Hyderabad, leading to major traffic snarls, particularly in Cyberabad and the city’s IT corridor, where commuters remained stranded for hours.

Several low-lying residential colonies reported flooding as drains overflowed amid continuous rainfall. Incidents of uprooted trees and blocked roads were also reported from different parts of the city.

Emergency response teams were deployed to monitor vulnerable locations, clear waterlogged stretches and attend to public complaints.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said conditions remain favourable for further strengthening of monsoon activity over Telangana in the coming days.

The weather department has issued a yellow alert for several districts, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, avoid waterlogged areas and immediately report damaged electrical infrastructure to prevent accidents during the ongoing spell of inclement weather.
