Says law and order collapsing in Bengal after judges gheraoed

Cooch Behar, 5th April: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) over the Malda incident, where judicial officers were allegedly gheraoed for hours, calling it an example of “maha jungleraj” in West Bengal.

Addressing an election rally in Cooch Behar, Modi said the incident raised serious concerns about governance and public safety in the state. “When judicial officers are not safe, how can common citizens feel secure?” he asked, targeting the government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Referring to the incident at Kaliachak-II Block Development Office in Malda, where seven judicial officers, including three women, were reportedly confined by a mob, the Prime Minister said the episode exposed a breakdown of law and order.

“We cannot expect such a government to ensure safety. What happened in Malda reflects the reality of TMC’s rule,” he said.

Modi further alleged that democratic institutions were under threat in the state, claiming that “democracy is bleeding” under the current administration. He also referred to the intervention of the Supreme Court of India, suggesting that the situation had reached alarming levels.

The Prime Minister linked the issue to broader concerns such as infiltration and what he termed appeasement politics, alleging demographic changes in border areas and claiming that such elements were being protected.

He also criticised the TMC for opposing measures like the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, stating that these steps were necessary for national security and electoral integrity.

The remarks come as political campaigning intensifies in West Bengal ahead of the upcoming elections, with law and order emerging as a key issue in the state.
