President Murmu Nominates Harivansh to Rajya Sabha

Deputy Chairman re-enters Upper House after term ends; fills vacancy left by Ranjan Gogoi

New Delhi, 10th April: President Droupadi Murmu has nominated Harivansh Narayan Singh as a Member of the Rajya Sabha, according to a Gazette notification issued on Friday.

The nomination comes a day after the conclusion of his previous term as a Janata Dal (United) member from Bihar on April 9. Harivansh, 69, has been serving as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha since 2018.

His appointment has been made under provisions of the Constitution to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of former nominated member Ranjan Gogoi.

Extensive Parliamentary Experience
Harivansh brings with him significant legislative experience, having been associated with several key committees of the Upper House, including the Committee on Agriculture, Business Advisory Committee, Committee on Rules, and the General Purposes Committee.

He has also chaired important panels such as the Committee on Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme and the Committee of Privileges, playing a crucial role in parliamentary functioning.

Role in Legislative Process
Over the years, he has contributed to major legislative scrutiny as part of Select and Joint Committees, including those examining the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill and the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

In addition, Harivansh has served on consultative bodies such as the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting committee and chaired the Content Advisory Committee of Rajya Sabha Television.

His parliamentary journey began with his election to the Rajya Sabha in 2014, followed by a re-election in 2020, before his recent nomination.

With his return to the Upper House, Harivansh is expected to continue playing a key role in parliamentary proceedings and legislative oversight.
