Patna, 14th April: In a major political shift, Samrat Choudhary has been chosen as the new Chief Minister of Bihar, becoming the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party to occupy the top post in the state.
The decision was announced after Choudhary was unanimously elected as the BJP legislature party leader in the presence of central observer Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
Historic Shift in Bihar Politics
With this development, the BJP has now secured Chief Ministerial positions across most Hindi heartland states, marking a breakthrough in Bihar where it had long remained a junior partner.
The oath-taking ceremony is expected to take place on Wednesday and may be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to sources.
Nitish Kumar Steps Aside
Earlier in the day, outgoing Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resigned from his post and extended full support to the incoming government.
In a symbolic gesture, Nitish Kumar garlanded Choudhary and asked party legislators to applaud the new leader, signalling a smooth transition of power.
Political Journey of Choudhary
The 57-year-old leader, who previously served as Deputy Chief Minister, belongs to the influential Kushwaha (Koeri) community, a key Other Backward Class (OBC) group in Bihar.
Choudhary began his political career in 1990 and has been associated with multiple parties, including the RJD and JD(U), before joining the BJP in 2017.
Known for his aggressive political stance, he had once vowed not to remove his saffron turban until he unseated Nitish Kumar—a stance that evolved after the BJP-JD(U) alliance was revived.
New Political Equation
The leadership change comes despite the JD(U) holding 85 seats in the 243-member Assembly, just four fewer than the BJP, reflecting a shift in power dynamics within the alliance.
With Choudhary at the helm, Bihar is set to witness a new phase in its political landscape under BJP leadership.
