New Delhi, 16th April: The Centre on Thursday introduced the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha, marking a major legislative move during the ongoing special session of Parliament.
Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal presented the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, initiating the process to provide one-third reservation for women in legislative bodies.
Alongside the Women’s Reservation Bill, the government also tabled the Delimitation Bill, 2026, laying the groundwork for restructuring parliamentary constituencies.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also introduced the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, adding to the day’s legislative agenda.
The introduction of the Bills triggered sharp reactions from the Opposition, with Congress MP K. C. Venugopal opposing all three legislations.
“The government wants to completely hijack the Constitution,” Venugopal said, formally recording the party’s objections in the House.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Home Minister Amit Shah clarified that the Bills have only been introduced and detailed discussions will take place later.
The move is expected to trigger an intense debate in Parliament over representation, delimitation and constitutional changes in the coming days.
