WASHINGTON – According to Iran state media on Wednesday reported that the Pakistani delegation has arrived in Tehran to convey a message from the US and plan the second round of meeting after the first round talks in Islamabad failed.

Pakistan delegation has been acting as a mediator in talks between the US and Iran to end the war, arrived in Tehran on Wednesday, media reported.

The delegation comprised the Army Chief Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

They were received by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi upon their arrival in Tehran.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has gone to Saudi Arabia, “to exchange views on the regional situation”.

The visits hold significance as they came a day after US President Donald Trump told reporters that the peace talks between the US and Iran may resume later this week.

Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps affiliated Tasnim news agency said that Tehran will decide on holding another round of peace talks with the US after meeting with the Pakistani delegation.

It cited “informed sources”, the Tasnim news report stated that the US and Israel agree to a ceasefire in Lebanon would be a “positive sign for Iran’s decision” on holding further negotiations with the US.

Iran stressed that the US “must adhere to a reasonable framework for negotiations” and must not “obstruct the process through excessive demands”.

The diplomatic push in Tehran came as US President Donald Trump indicated that, while he is not considering extending the ongoing two-week ceasefire, a negotiated settlement remains the preferred path.

US and Iran held direct negotiations on April 11-12 in Islamabad but the meeting failed to yield any results.

Vice President Vance, who led the US delegation, said that they are behind their “final and best offer”. Iran said that the talks failed because the US demands were “excessive” as he departed Islamabad.
