New Delhi, 3rd May: A devastating fire in East Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area claimed nine lives, including a one-year-old child, after flames engulfed a four-storey residential building in the early hours of Friday.
The blaze reportedly began on the second floor around 4 am before rapidly spreading to upper levels, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Fourteen fire tenders were deployed as firefighters battled the inferno for nearly two hours before bringing it under control.
More than a dozen residents were rescued, while two injured individuals were admitted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for treatment.
Officials said search and rescue teams recovered all bodies from the building following intensive operations.
Preliminary local accounts suggested that an air-conditioner explosion may have triggered the fire, though the exact cause remains under formal investigation.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta termed the incident deeply tragic and assured full administrative support for affected families.
Senior officials from the Delhi Fire Service, local administration, police and disaster management agencies remain engaged in ongoing relief efforts.
The tragedy has once again raised urgent concerns over urban fire safety standards and emergency preparedness in densely populated residential zones.
