Kolkata, 4th May: The Bharatiya Janata Party maintained a strong lead in the West Bengal Assembly elections as counting progressed on Monday, with senior leader Suvendu Adhikari attributing the surge to consolidation of Hindu votes and increased support from tribal communities.

Speaking as early trends showed the BJP ahead in a significant number of seats, Adhikari said the outcome reflects public dissatisfaction with the incumbent government.

“The people voted against misrule,” he said, while highlighting that the party’s long-standing ambition to gain power in West Bengal was rooted in its ideological history.

Adhikari credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and campaign efforts, stating that the results were a reflection of both grassroots support and national leadership.

He also claimed that voting patterns did not split along gender lines but instead reflected broader community alignment, particularly among Hindu voters.

Referring to tribal regions and border areas, Adhikari said the BJP had expanded its base significantly, contributing to its electoral momentum.

Despite speculation about his role as a potential Chief Minister, he declined to comment, reiterating that the BJP operates under collective leadership.

The counting trends indicate a possible political shift in the state, which has been governed by Mamata Banerjee since 2011.

With the majority mark set at 148 in the 294-member Assembly, the BJP’s early lead positions it strongly in the race to form the government.
