Thiruvananthapuram, 4th May: Congress leader V. D. Satheesan on Monday said the Congress-led United Democratic Front is set for a decisive victory in the Kerala Assembly elections, describing the outcome as a “secular mandate” from voters.
With counting trends showing the UDF ahead in a comfortable majority of seats in the 140-member Assembly, Satheesan said the alliance’s internal projections of crossing the 100-seat mark had broadly materialised.
He attributed the victory to strong anti-incumbency against the Left Democratic Front government and the UDF’s focus on governance, economic concerns and employment issues.
Satheesan highlighted that voters responded to the alliance’s promise of an alternative model addressing fiscal stress, public services and migration concerns in the state.
He also underlined Kerala’s secular ethos, asserting that the UDF had consciously distanced itself from any form of communal politics.
On the question of leadership, Satheesan declined to comment on who would be the next Chief Minister, stating that the decision would be taken by the Congress High Command following established procedures.
Political observers note that the Congress has multiple leadership options within the state unit, adding to speculation over the eventual choice.
As trends indicate a clear shift in voter preference, the result is expected to mark the Congress-led alliance’s first Assembly victory in Kerala in over two decades.
