Kolkata, 4th May: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee struck a defiant tone on counting day, urging her party workers to remain resilient even as early trends showed the Bharatiya Janata Party crossing the majority mark in the Assembly elections.
In a video message, Banerjee told Trinamool Congress cadres to “wait for sunset,” expressing confidence that the outcome would change as more counting rounds are completed.
She alleged disruptions in counting at several locations and claimed that the unfolding trends were part of a broader strategy against her party.
Only a fraction of the total counting rounds had been completed at the time of her statement, with officials indicating that a significant portion of votes remained to be tallied.
Banerjee, often referred to as the “Agni Kanya” for her combative political style, has been at the helm of West Bengal politics for over a decade and a half, after ending the Left Front’s long rule in 2011.
However, this election has posed one of her toughest political challenges, marked by anti-incumbency, allegations of corruption, economic concerns and controversies over law and order.
Issues such as recruitment irregularities, governance questions and voter roll revisions have dominated the campaign narrative, reshaping the political landscape.
The BJP’s rapid rise in the state has further intensified the contest, turning the election into a decisive battle for Bengal’s political future.
Despite the adverse trends, Banerjee signaled that her party would continue to fight, leaving open the possibility of a late reversal as counting progresses.
